As the Independence Day weekend comes to a close, I am reminded of some of the reasons we are free. Many soldiers, brave patriots both men and women, took up arms to fight for the principle that we should be a free nation. I am proud that our ancestors fought so we may have the freedoms and privileges we enjoy today!
There are, of course, several documents that have helped to shape and form the foundation for these liberties. The United States Constitution, being among the greatest documents to have ever been penned, states:
“We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Then we have the Emancipation Proclamation where Abraham Lincoln boldly proclaims: “All persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.”
It is totally unique to America that both the Constitution and the Emancipation Proclamation echo some basic and straightforward teachings directly from the Bible. The talk of unity, justice, tranquility welfare, and blessings of liberty would not be possible if these men and women did not believe in the words written down thousands of years prior in the Good Book.
The very basis of union nods to Genesis 2:24 when man and woman are joined together, just as the colonies did against Britain. Justice can be related to the book of Proverbs 21:3 where it is said:
“to do justice and judgement is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”
Tranquility can be found in the book of Daniel 4:27 as he talks about lengthening the king’s tranquility. Welfare hearkens back to Nehemiah 2:10 as he sought the welfare of the children of Israel and the blessings of liberty are a common theme in the Bible from the Pentateuch to Revelation.
The very foundation of the GREATEST country ever devised by men is rooted in the scriptures. Divine inspiration can be seen in this nation from birth to today with prophecy being fulfilled before our very eyes.
When Abraham Lincoln gave his great speech he was simply a “Moses” of his time, seeking the freedom and equality that should be the very minimum for each and every human being. No longer would an enslaved man be counted as 3/5 of a person but as one equal to a white man. This was an important step for this nation. It has also been a firebrand, acting as the catalyst for “The War of Northern Aggression.” Should it have been though? Isn’t freedom and Liberty a basic human right?
As the years have gone on, the U.S. has grown more and more like the children of Israel. We’ve taken these liberties we enjoy and perverted them into something that is a stench in the nostrils of our creator. Many now worship the creature more than the creator. We’ve become idolators, soothsayers, lovers of strange flesh, and burned in our lust one toward another, just as Israel did throughout the Bible.
If this nation wants to get back on track as a country worthy of the blood of brave patriots, then we must turn from our wickedness and the evil that has plagued and defiled this land for far too long.
“Who knowing the judgement of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” Romans 1:32
