My husband and I are admittedly terrible at keeping gifts a secret. We always end up blabbing or giving so many hints that it’s impossible for the other not to guess what it is. I get this same vibe from Jesus in this verse.
I picture the woman at the well being slightly annoyed when Jesus arrives. Not only did he ruin her well-thought-out plan to remain unseen (that up until now had been working) but then had the audacity to ask her to draw him some water?? In her mind, she must have thought, “Sure. You’re too good to associate with me in public, but you don’t mind to put me to work, fetching your water, while you sit and watch me.”
I picture Jesus just gushing, almost giddy with excitement, bursting at the seams, as he says, “If you only KNEW who I am…” This woman, rejected by society, becomes the first outsider he chooses to reveal himself to. One would think it would have been a religious scholar, who had studied all the prophecies and was looking for the Messiah. But, no. It was this failure of a woman, too many sins (and husbands) to name. A very adequate representation of humanity, who He, in fact, came to save.
